Quit Sugar? Impossible!

So I am laughing my head off tonight because I have been considering going on a no sugar thing for 30 days, but as I am considering it, I am making delicious sugaryness left and right!!! I went on a much needed grocery shopping trip last night because due to all the sickness we are out of EVERYTHING!!! So I planned for lots of yummy new dinners to try and lots of yummy treats, that have sugar. The reason I was thinking about trying the no sugar thing is because I think I am so super addicted, a sugaraholic and I need to stop!!! :) So I go back and forth with the "all things in moderation" and sometimes think "NO! I cannot just have sugar in moderation. I simply want it all the time." And that is just not good, I don't want to get diabetes. But seriously, look at the yumminess I made tonight, and I seriously ate till I was sick and it was really fun. But YUCK! A blog I read is about a girl who went a whole year without refined sugar or artificial sweeteners and she talks about how great it feels. You should check it out!
So the yummy food I made was applesauce cookies which was a recipe my friend Candice gave me and I has one at her house about a month ago and have been craving them ever since. And then for some reason I had to make a key lime pie too, because I was just in the mood to bake The pie was amazing, but I am a sucker for key lime pie. Jed even helped juice the cute little limes. He did great. So I pretty much am on a sugar high right now! :) Should I start my no sugar thing tomorrow? :)

So if you want the recipes for the deliciousness here they are

Candice's Applesauce Cookies
1 lg can of applesauce (I used 1 1/2 cups because I wasn't quite sure how much to use, let me know if that is wrong Candice!)
2 tsp baking soda
2 cups sugar
5-6 cups flour
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cloves (I used allspice cause that is all I had)
1 tsp salt
1 cup shortening (yikes!)
4 eggs
1 package chocolate chips

Cream together sugar and shortening, the add eggs and then applesauce. Mix dry ingredients in separate bowl, then add to wet ingredients. Mix well and then add chocolate chips. Bake at 400 degrees for 9-12 minutes. YUMMM!!

Key Lime Pie
1 14 0z can sweetened condensed milk
4 egg yolks
40z Susies key lime juice (I bought Susies key limes and Jed juiced em)
1 9in graham cracker pie shell (I made one with 1/2 wax paper package graham crakers and 4 TB Butter, mixed together and pressed into pie pan, bake at 350 for 5 min)

Mix on low speed: condensed milk, add egg yolks slowly, add susie's key lime juice, mix well, pour into pie shell and bake 350 for 20 minutes. Chill in fridge and serve with whipped cream on top.

I vote for the "all things in moderation" idea. It's my mantra because I just can't go without sugar either. Besides, if you go without for awhile you'll probably fall off the bandwagon and binge like crazy. I've noticed, though, that if I eat bananas and apples throughout the day, then I don't crave as much refined sugar. Maybe that will help you?

I am sooo hungry today. It is a good thing I didn't read this until late, or I probably would be baking right now!

That key lime pie looks amazing! I'm not sure I could ever go a year without sugar, but it sounds like a pretty awesome challenge. You should check out my aunt's blog. She does this 21 day cleanse and posts recipes and such on it...I want to do it once I'm done breastfeeding!

Why bother wasting life worrying about trivial things like not eating sugar! Just keep eating it and don't overdo it! Bring on the sugar!!!

Hey Heather it is Rebecca, Marie's friend. I am all for you trying to go without sugar. You can do it. I don't think anyone needs refined sugar in any moderation! And especially our children. There are so many delicious things to make without using refined sugar. It is horrible. Try reading Sugar Blues and it will convince you! Amazingly, the addiction will completely vanish. I am expecting a baby and it was horrible for me, because during my first trimester I craved sugar. It was so foreign, since our family hasn't eaten refined sugar for over 3 years. It is so much harder to avoid it, when you crave it. Thankfully, I'm out of that first trimester, the cravings immediately vanished and I am back to my normal self. (Funny the same thing happened in my last pregnancy too. Go figure, those hormones are crazy.)

I guess what I am saying is yes the cravings are completely real. But also they can go away. It is fairly simple to learn how to substitute natural sweeteners. But I am extremely passionate about nutrition, so I have a bias. I don't think it is too hard for anyone to change. Well this was a lot for a comment and you don't even know me :) I don't mean to be preachy at all! I hope I didn't come off as such, I just wanted to give you a little hope and an alternate perspective.

So, I think it would be very interesting to go without sugar and may want to give that one a little try. I could use some help in that area as well! I seriously want to come workout T/Th, maybe next week? I'll let you know!

Thanks for the input all! It is very interesting to read the thoughts about this - I definitely think it would be worth it to try, what would it hurt? Dan, you are so funny, but I think I am still going to try it. What if it makes me run way faster? :) But Rachel's pumpkin bread was super good. But since there are so many natural sweeteners out there like honey and so on, I think it would be kind of fun to experiment with. Rebecca - thanks so much for your thoughts! Marie said you had super yummy recipes so I was really excited and I love your blog. Very inspiring. I can't believe you have done that for 3 years!!! and good job on the running so far into pregnancy! I would love to chat with you and ask you all sorts of questions.
Becky! You have to come work out Tuesday! It would be so fun. Let me know! Maybe you and I could do the sugar challenge together! :)
